Perhaps nowhere else in the Lower 48 United States does the color green associate itself more than it does than with the City of Olympia. Everywhere you choose to roam in this 18.9 square mile, 150 year old city you will find lush greenery: Towering fir, maple, alder, ash, cedar, cottonwood, and those incredible Madrona trees. Blooming rhododendrons, ferns, sedge, dogwood, and hundreds of other species of plants and trees perform a floral, visual orchestra of color, smell, and sight. Olympia’s location (GPS coordinates 47°2’33”N 122°53’35”W) located at the southern tip of Puget Sound, places it smack dab in the weather pattern derived from our neighbors to the north, the Aleutian Islands chain of Alaska, ensuring a steady stream of moisture to keep all that lush vegetation in its proper state of greenery.
To take advantage of the abundant natural greenery, Olympia maintains several City parks noteworthy of mention, surrounded by some of the finest Olympia homes for sale. Woodard Bay Natural Conservation Area is a 600 acre parcel preserving more than 5 miles of waterfront of Henderson Inlet. Percival Landing, Watershed Park, Priest, Burfoot, and Yauger parks are also worthwhile of a visit.
Olympia is historically dependent and famously known for its artisan water supply. Artisan springs were, and continue to be a prime source of water for the city, both for commercial uses and for residential homes. Additionally, those same natural springs made famous one of the most recognizable beers in the world, the now defunct Olympia Beer, bottled by the Olympia Brewing Company, established in 1896.
Washington gained statehood 11 November, 1889. Olympia was established in 1851 when the U.S. Congress created the Customs District of Puget Sound Territory. Population grew, and in 1853 the town settled on its now famous name, Olympia, due to its northwest view of the Olympic Mountains. Prior to Peter Puget’s European visits to the area in 1792, Native American Lushootseed-speaking peoples including Nisqually, Squaxin, Puyallup, Chehalis, and others had made the area home for thousands of years.
Modern Olympia is a mix of modernism and naturalism. While Olympia is the State Capital of Washington, and the seat of political power for the Pacific Northwest, Olympia is also a hot spot for those individuals who believe “less is more”, a Mecca for those individuals who believe nature should be left natural, and man is but merely a small participant. Olympia is a destination for artists and musicians: Evergreen State College is testament, and because of Evergreen, Olympia was recently named one of the best college towns in the nation, due to its vibrant downtown and access to outdoor activities. The Festival of the Species is a prime example of these activities. Oh, and you can’t call your stay in Olympia complete without a visit to the Olympia Farmers Market, which is but a short walking distance to historical Olympia homes.
Due to its geographical location on the Puget Sound, Olympia is famous for its culinary choices, particularly its seafood restaurants, many within walking distance from Olympia homes for sale. While Olympia has many Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and American fares, it is the Waterfront Seafood restaurants that truly show what this city is famous for. Places such as Anthony’s Homeport, Oyster House, and Budd Bay Cafe with its 180 degree views from the State Capitol to the Olympic Mountains, the seafood choices are plenty.
Perhaps nowhere else in Washington does the dichotomy exist for home choices than in Olympia, Washington. As mentioned earlier, the modernism of some neighborhoods in Olympia directly oppose other more “with nature” and historic home choices. Green construction and home-building is all the rage for Olympia WA homes for sale. Whether you choose to live in Eastside, Westside, or the surrounding communities of Tumwater, Lacey, or Hawks Prairie, Olympia WA homes for sale are truly diverse. Historic homes, modern homes, apartments, and duplexes are available. Do you want Waterfront Olympia homes? We have it. Do you need an Olympia home for sale such as a large, custom home on acreage? We have it, too. Do you want to own Olympia WA homes on an island? We have Steamboat Island for your home living choice. Are you a history buff? How about purchasing an Olympia historic home? Olympia also has many foreclosures, bank owned, and short sales available.
As you can see, Olympia, Washington is a very diverse, incredibly beautiful city. Smaller than Seattle, Olympia has nearly everything the "big city" has to offer, with the small town feeling many people enjoy. Yet only an hour South of Seattle, the big city is close enough to visit
