Perhaps nowhere else in the Lower 48 United States does the color green associate itself more than it does than with the City of Olympia. Prior to Peter Puget’s European visits to the area in 1792, Native American Lushootseed-speaking peoples including Nisqually, Squaxin, Puyallup, Chehalis, and others had made the area home for thousands of years.
Modern Olympia is a mix of modernism and naturalism. While Olympia is the State Capital of Washington, and the seat of political power for the Pacific Northwest, Olympia is also a hot spot for those individuals who believe “less is more”, a Mecca for those individuals who believe nature should be left natural, and man is but merely a small participant. Olympia is a destination for artists and musicians: Evergreen State College is testament, and because of Evergreen, Olympia was recently named one of the best college towns in the nation, due to its vibrant downtown and access to outdoor activities. The Festival of the Species is a prime example of these activities.
