Some folks have been asking what the new agritourism overlay district is about that is just about to go into effect in Thurston County.The point of the designated “red zone” is to ease restrictions on land use for value-added agricultural enterprises on small farms not zoned agriculture.This includes the ability to set up a farm booth of a certain size without a permit, offer farm stays on your property, and stage agricultural events to bring the public to your farm.All these uses, and more, help the county define opportunities for small farm owners, and give them the chance to creatively add income to their farm. It also increases agricultural revenue in the county.The zone is not set in stone, though.Officials hope to incorporate more areas in this overlay district after the 18-24 month trial period.You can get more information about how the new regulations will affect you by going to the Thurston County website.
