County fairs used to be all about livestock shows, art exhibits, baking contests and good, clean family fun. This high-tech generation has forced many fairs to bring in huge celebrity names and charge outrageous prices to draw a crowd.Puyallup Fair is a good example. While, I admit, going to a big fair can be loads of fun, I grow weary of paying the price for all the glitz and glamour.Thurston County has opted to leave the high dollar entertainment out of their fair and focus on good Family Fun.
August 1-5, you can expect to find a fair just like the good old days. The fairgrounds in Lacey open up with dollar days Wednesday, Aug 1.Bring a canned good and get in for a dollar. All rides are also a dollar each – a real fair deal. The kids and I loved the magic show with Professor Bamboozle last year. You will often find him at the Olympia Farmers Market making character balloons for the kids. His magic show is one of the highlights of the fair, however, and you don’t need an extra ticket to see it.He’s been participating in the Thurston County Fair for many years and looks forward to pulling out all the stops for the kids (and grownups) there.
The exhibits and livestock, horse and pet shows at the fair provide something to do around the clock, and it took us all day to see everything. If you have some creative skills, you really should submit some of your own art, gardening creations or baked goods for judging.Community participation is what makes a fair a worthwhile place to meet, greet, and find the very best of your county.Check out the event line-up on the Thurston County Fair website.See you there!
