My Yelm dentists gave me a referral for an orthodontist in Dupont for my daughters braces.I've never really questioned referrals before. If you like your doctor or, in this case, dentist, you simply take that little slip of paper and make the phone call to make an appointment. This time, I just sat scratching my head. There is an orthodontist in Yelm. Why was I being referred to Dupont? So, I asked.I learned a very important lesson in connections. It seems that doctors and dentists, like everyone else, make friends, connections, relationships. They feel comfortable working with certain people, and so, they want to continue working with them.It seems my dentist had worked with the Dupont office in the past and had built a relationship with them.It really had nothing to do with how good or bad the local office was.
I made a decision to toss the paperwork and contact the Yelm office for my daughter's dental work.I am really glad I did.Dr. Leavitt Orthodontics is super. The office is spacious and modern with an ample supply of magazines. The front desk receptionists are positive and helpful, and I really liked the family atmosphere. On top of that, the quote for orthodontic work was substantially lower than the other quote I got a couple of years ago.All that, and I don't have to leave town for all those follow-up appointments.
So, just because your doctor hands you a referral doesn't mean you have to use it.Do your research, and follow your instincts. You might just find a better option that fits your lifestyle and needs.
