Reading Your School Progress Report

Reading Your School Progress Report

In a previous blog I mentioned the danger of relying solely on Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports to score a school.  If the school you're looking at doesn't make AYP, there is an easy way you can get to the bottom of the cause.  Go to the school website and click on that school's performance report/state test scores.  What you'll find is a breakdown of those categories that must all meet the standard for AYP inclusion.

For example, here is a standard form for Prairie Elementary School in Yelm school district.  You'll notice a demographics section on the right, and on the left is a listing of the past year's exam results.  Going into the grade level  link will give you a much better picture of the results.  Levels indicate performance.  Basic level refers to those special education students whose test scores are adjusted to better reflect their ability to meet testing standards.  In the Prairie example, 80 percent of students met or exceeded standards in reading, and 70.9 percent met or exceeded standard.

Again, while these scores better reflect the school's performance than the straight AYP results, test scores are not the only way to evaluate a potential school for your children.
