Whether trick-or-treating in downtown Tacoma, Puyallup, Orting or Olympia there are a few things that parents and kids can do to make sure that everyone has a fun and safe night. Before leaving the house, make sure you start off on the right foot by making sure that costumes are safe, with good ventilation and visibility. Equip trick-or-treaters with flashlights, bags that are bright and add something reflective to costumes so that your little goblins and witches are noticeable as they go from house to house. Don’t forget to check costumes for any tripping hazards for they are sure to be running and climbing up countless steps while acquiring their loot. Also, make sure you take the time to explain to your children the importance of going with and staying with their group and to never enter anyone’s house. And of course, always be sure to check all the candy your child brings back for anything suspicious. Be sure to throw out anything with an open wrapper or anything that looks like it may have been tampered with. “When in doubt, throw it out!” Lastly, as a word of caution to all those who will be behind the wheel this Wednesday, be cautious of all the additional pedestrians that will be out and about. It’s easy not to see them; especially the little ones, so drive slow and be extra vigilant. Halloween should be a time of fun so keep it safe for everyone!
