Winter is approaching rapidly corresponding with the rapidly growing homeless population in Olympia. Multiple organizations, both government and private, are scrambling to meet the need. This Thanksgiving as you gather around the table to give thanks for the bounty you have been blessed with this year, the family who loves you, the community you love, take some time out to give the gift of hope to a family whose year has not been as abundant. What better way to instill compassion and a sense of accomplishment in your children than to include them in your giving?
The Interfaith Community has recently opened an overflow shelter, and they are in need of several items as well as any volunteers to help the shelter run smoothly. Items like winter socks, infant car seats, cleansing wipes, and trash bags. One of the biggest needs at the shelter is for bus tickets which allow the homeless to get back and forth to the shelter each night.
Many other organizations offer help for the homeless, like the Catholic Community Services of Thurston County. This organization serves hot meals seven days a week for families. They also offer facilities for emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing. The Catholic community pours their heart and soul into their mission to reduce homelessness in Thurston county by 50%. You can be part of their effort.
These two organizations work in a joint effort with government programs to help boost the coverage to more families and individuals in need. You can volunteer time and/or resources through the individual organization or you may contact the Family Support Center of South Sound for more places to volunteer.
The homeless represent more than just a person on the street corner holding a sign. They represent the men, women and children whose lives could be forever altered with just the touch of one generous heart, like yours.
