If you want a place to take the kids for a picnic and a short hike, you really should get out to visit Tumwater Falls Park.This privately owned park is part of the Tumwater historic district as the first American settlement north of the Columbia River.The buildings from the 1896 Olympia Brewing Company still stand, and have been bought by a Centralia business man in preparation for an enormous restoration project which will transform the original buildings into apartments or a hotel and a luxury shopping plaza complete with a new bridge connecting the brewery to the park.This project will be partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy with a $90,000 grant bringing new businesses and new life to the Tumwater downtown.
It's a half-mile hike down the river passing roaring falls, Pacific Northwest foliage and beautiful rock formations.In season, salmon make their way up this river to the salmon ladders installed there.A picnic area with tables and a children's playground make a perfect spot to stop for a snack or lunch.The kids will enjoy a good roll down the steep, grassy embankments.Don't forget to bring your camera for some amazing photo shoot opportunities.
