Last fall at the Roy Rodeo, I noticed that the announcer kept saying how quick he was going to fly to the Bunk House BBQ in McKenna as soon as the action in the arena was done.Of course, it makes sense when The Bunkhouse is a major sponsor for the Roy rodeo every year. However, I was really curious as to whether all the hype was just that, hype, or was genuine. So, we tried it.The service was a bit slow, and we had to sit outside (fortunately it wasn't a typical rainy, Pacific Northwest day), but the BBQ chicken we ordered was excellent, and the kids really loved their burgers.
The menu included a plug for their big breakfasts. So, the next week my husband and I decided to try it.We are big fans of real eggs, biscuits and gravy along with homemade hash browns. We were not disappointed. The plate was packed with the kind of food you might expect to find in Texas. My biggest surprise was the crisp bacon that practically melted in my mouth.I have never had bacon that good, even when my dad used to trade some of his tomato crop for fresh smoked bacon and sausage.I would go back to The Bunk House just for the bacon.
Now, the main problem I had was the fact that there were so few seats available, due to the large popularity of this restaurant. However, The Bunk House will be moving by the end of March to a new, bigger, location on the north side of Yelm past the high school on the way to Lacey. It's the old Little Red Caboose restaurant that never was.Despite the fact that no one's been able to make a go at that location, the owners say they have every expectation to do well because they will be bringing their huge clientele along with them.I am proud to say that I will be one of them.
