The best two towns within an hour’s drive of Olympia are Sumner to the North and Centralia to the South.Both have adorable personalities and truly unique shops.But, I have to admit, I favor Centralia over Sumner for one very distinct reason:The Berry Fields Café.This little restaurant gets two thumbs up for its huge sandwich portions (you’ll want to order a half, trust me) and top-notch desserts.The Marion Berry cobbler is nothing short of spectacular, especially in-season.It stacks into several layers of berry and yummy crust along with a generous dose of ice cream.You can ask them to bring two spoons, but you’ll be fighting over the last bite, for sure.After you have lunch, you have a good hour of shopping to do in the antique mall Berry Fields Café is attached to.Don’t miss the upstairs attic which used to be a live theatre back in the day.You have to take a creepily steep flight of stairs to get up there, but the antique furniture you’ll uncover will be worth the trek.The basement holds even more treasures.
Be sure to go early enough to visit the many other antique shops along main street.I have found many a smashing deal tucked away inside the Centralia antique shops, including a full 1800s wardrobe I snagged for $300 which needed nothing but new hinges for the doors.
